Why I built PD101
Competitive debate was never built for the students who need it most. Here is how I designed a policy debate platform that meets them where they are.
Competitive debate wasn’t built for the students who need it most. Policy debate has decades of pedagogical exclusion baked into its vocabulary, its pacing, and its interfaces. My students — Chicago middle schoolers on IEPs, ELLs, kids reading two grade levels below — needed a way in that didn’t require reading three flowcharts first.
We can unlock policy debate for the eighth-grader who wants to compete but balances family duties with schoolwork. By rethinking traditional preparation, we turn systemic hurdles into open doorways, welcoming brilliant students with busy lives into this transformative activity.
What the research already knows
For students who chose policy debate, the academic rewards are immense. A 2011 Chicago study proved that policy debate boosts reading scores by the equivalent of 68% of a school year, offering the greatest growth to baseline learners.1 In Houston, a 2021 follow-up linked debate to a 0.66 GPA increase and substantial SAT gains, raising college readiness by 18%.2
Those numbers tell me the activity works. What they do not tell me is how to get a kid who has never seen the format to make it through her first cross-examination.
Three barriers, three design choices
As a special education teacher, I built PD101 to bring these life-changing benefits to every student by clearing the path forward through three intentional design choices.
Removing scheduling barriers. Instead of restrictive, hours-long live lectures, I designed PD101 to offer self-paced, bite-sized missions. This gives students the freedom to master complex policy concepts whenever and wherever it fits into their day.
Removing cognitive barriers. PD101 swaps overwhelming text walls for interactive game mechanics. Students confidently assemble arguments like visual game items, making deep analytical thinking intuitive, engaging, and accessible.
Removing identity barriers. PD101 invites every student to see themselves as natural debaters. By embedding culturally responsive scenarios directly into core missions, I celebrate diverse lived experiences as the foundation of great arguments.
The door and the step through it
By making debate flexible, visual, and deeply inclusive, I built a platform that empowers a new generation of brilliant minds to thrive. When we design learning to meet students exactly where they are, we don’t just open a door — we inspire them to step through and lead.
Beyond policydebate101.com, I’m building MathMissions 101 — a culturally responsive, science fiction game where students learn strategies to build math skills.
