The Ocean at the End of the LaneThe Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Gaiman’s short novel takes place in a thinly veiled platonic world where one young boy is violently thrown into a nightmare-like tale where bravery must overtake fear time and time again. “The Ocean an the End of the Lane” is a horror story for young readers, but also provides a palatable amount of literary brilliance for readers of all ages.

I enjoyed this book and will carry a few of the quotes around with me for awhile. My favorite quote was by Old Mrs. Hempstock. “Nothing’s ever the same,” she said. “Be it a second later or a hundred years. It’s always churning and roiling. And people change as much as oceans.”

Almost every day when I arrive at work I jot down the words “Live it Well” in my notebook. It’s a reminder to embrace the day, live intentionally, and to be grateful. I’m happy to borrow these lyrics from @switchfoot, an incredible band who Lillian and I saw for the fourth time together tonight. We always leave their shows inspired and with more hope than we walked in with. “Life is short; I wanna live it well One life, one story to tell Life is short; I wanna live it well And you're the one I'm living for Awaken o my soul Every breath that you take is a miracle Life is short; I wanna live it well.” #liveitwell #loveisournativetongue #switchfoot #gratitude #hopeisananthem #whereibelong #nativetongue #foreverstartsnow @colonyhouse

For the last three years I have worked with my friend Eric Teoh on an advocacy initiative in my neighborhood to correct a mistake - made by Arlington County staff - which was having a devastating effect on the quality of life for hundreds of my neighbors, disproportionately those in lower income situations. Well, this week the Arlington County Board unanimously voted on a resolution which will solve the issue that we fought so hard to fix! It is a HUGE win for the people of my neighborhood. Read more here: https://www.arlnow.com/2019/01/29/county-repeals-controversial-parking-restrictions-in-forest-glen-arlington-mill-neighborhoods/ The Arlington County Board members should be proud of themselves for stepping in and making this change. I am thankful for all my friends and neighbors who helped support our initiative along the way! Local politics may be a boring hobby (I can recall some meetings where I wanted to tear my eyes out). BUT you better believe that there are some very opinionated people in these local meetings who are making a lot of decisions about your life. If you’re fired up about politics in general then I highly suggest you get involved at the local level. It may feel good to voice your political opinions on social media, but in the end, you are not having a very big impact. If you want to make a difference, you have to get involved at the local level. #localpoliticsmatter #communityorganizing #theobstacleistheway #lovethyneighbor #lovethyneighborhood
